Technology Rant

First of all, I want to thank Erika, Debbie, Stephanie, Darla, Angel, Charlotte, Lauren, Melva, and Tina for their kind words about my books. Luv ya. Special shout out to Michele for keeping the faith. And sorry, Cindy, but I guess I’m still on your wall of blogger shame.

Warning, rant ahead. A few weeks ago I had some heavy revising to do on my January book, ONE BITE STAND. A day after I got the call from my editor telling me about her concerns, my laptop crashed. Figures. Since it would be about a week before I got the laptop back, I ran out to buy a new computer. Surprise, surprise, all the ones I looked at had the new Vista program on them. Beggars can’t be choosers and all that stuff, so I bought one. Arrgh! I hadn’t a clue what to do with the new version of Word, so I did the revisions on an old NEC computer I have that doesn’t have online capability anymore. Then I had to put everything on a floppy disk and transfer it to my new computer to send to my editor. She must’ve been able to open it because she said the revisions were fine, but my critique partners complained they couldn’t open work I sent from the new computer. Luckily, one of them showed me how to convert my chapters back to the old version of Word. And now no one seems able to figure out what’s wrong with my laptop–which is not old and was expensive–so I have to learn the new Word. Oh, and a minor aside, Vista won’t talk to my laser printer. Question, why fix it if it isn’t broke? My old Windows was fine. I loved the old version of Word. I know. MONEY.

Taking a deep calming breath. Ahhh. What I’m doing now. I just sent my editor the proposal for the book after ONE BITE STAND. No title yet. It takes place at the Woo Woo Inn, but we’ll meet a few familiar faces from the Castle of Dark Dreams (Edge, Holgarth, and possibly one other). There will be a new wrinkle in this book, though. Ganymede won’t be in it, and Sparkle will only be heard from in phone calls. In their places they’ve sent Edge (cosmic troublemaker in charge of death) and Rainbow (cosmic troublemaker in charge of emotions). Ganymede and Sparkle get pretty intense in ONE BITE STAND so I thought it might be time to give them a rest, at least for one book. What do you think?

What I’m reading. I’m in the middle of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s DEVIL MAY CRY. I’m pathetic. I keep saying I won’t buy hardbacks, that I’ll wait for the books to come out in paperback, but I have absolutely no self-control. As soon as I hit the bookstore, the hardbacks pop into my hands. Anyway, I can’t keep away from Sherrilyn’s Dark Hunter series. My bad. And for those who answered my question about Lara Adrian, I did read KISS OF CRIMSON and really enjoyed it.

Well, guess I’m all ranted out, so I’ll get back to my wip. Oh, and if anyone knows how to find all underlines in a document and then replace them with italics, please let me know. I knew how to do this with my old Word, but the new version is different.

Take care,
Nina the frustrated

  1. Sorry, I don’t know anything about the new vista either…you should be able to get onto Microsoft online and search through their help pages to find an answer or pose the question yourself. Most times you get an answer pretty quick from someone else that has had the problem. Try the following page and see if you can find some help! Good Luck! http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/default.mspx

One Bite Stand…sounds interesting can you tell me anything about it at this point or where you may have blogged about it?

  2. Nina,
I wanted to send you this to let you know how much I enjoy your books. I too(like so many of your readers) began by reading The Pleasure Master. I have told all my friends about you. Even the non romance reader’s.:0 I have just finished the wicked fantasy books. I can hardly wait for the new ones in Jan ‘08
    Keep up the good work.

  3. LOL, Nina!! Wow, a new post! Awesome!
And I hear you loud and clear about Word 2007. All those new fangled buttons remind me of a console on a spaceship or jet. I got it myself a month ago because I didn’t have word at all and now that I’m a reviewer, I need to open files and without word, it was impossible. So, I broke down, spent the moula and Voila! More confusion.
    LOL

As for the latest Dark Hunter book….Oooh, wasn’t it grand? Did you EVER suspect who was her daddy? Never mind her mom… what a combo!!

The intro of new cosmic trouble makers sounds like fun! Can’t wait to see what you do with them and what they do to others. Love your sense of humor, Nina!

  4. Nina, you may be able to use the Find & Replace option under Edit. I’ll look around at my Vista at home and see if I can fiddle with it enough to find out. We actually had something very similar happen. We’ve been running off our ‘95 computer for years now and just updating the hardware as needed. Well, the old bird finally took a nose dive into the blue screen of death so, long story short, we now have a beautiful new computer.

I have to say, I reread the Castle of Dark Dreams set again, and I am very excited to hear about Edge. Oooh, he pushed all my buttons, honey!!

Just remember, technology is always confusing, and we all understand the frustration :)

Love ya! Can’t wait for the new books!

  5. Nina,

I love your books! I am in the middle of reading Wicked Fantasy and I got to say Edge is so my type of man! Forget the McNair brothers, give me a cosmic troublemaker any day!

I’m sorry to hear there won’t be much of Ganymede and Sparkle in the next book, I do so love them and just can’t get enough of them. I also am sad to see Deimos going away, I thought he was adorable. Please say he’ll drop in for a very appearances.

I was sort of hoping Edge would be a competitor for Ganymede for Sparkle’s affection. I mean those two (Edge and Sparkle) bicker so much in Wicked Fantasy that just got me thinking there’s something else going on below the surface. I mean Sparkle had her competition with Asima over Ganymede, I think someone should come in and let Mede know how good of a catch Sparkle is. And I think Edge should be the man. Those two has the chemistry (you know when two people feel so much contempt for each other they really deep like admire the other) to really set off some explosive passions:-) Besides, hadn’t it been said that at the height of passion it’s like a little death;-)

Anywhoo, keep up the great work and write faster!

    Love

    Cindy

  7. Glad to see another Jim Butcher fan. Unfortunately the series got cancelled (ARGH!) but the DVDs are available! I have now got another Nina convert waiting and drooling in anticipation of another Woo Woo book. I am a BAD influence. My book pile is in danger of toppling over and now there is another to add in January…. I’d best get hopping! The Dark Hunter books are addictive, as are your friend Gerry’s “Real Vamps”. Her heroine is funny! Looking forward to more of your books, and the space on my bookshelves are already groaning with EVERY one of yours. Have you read any of Katie MacAlister’s? She also has humor abounding. If you have not, I suggest you start with “The Corset Diaries” not a vamp but a contemporary and hilarious. Again, thanks for all the previous entertaining books and I look forward to more of the same enjoyment!

  8. Hello,
I am new to your site and to your books, I just got one from a friend for an early xmas present! I am loving it!!
As to your dilema about Word, believe it or not, if you still have your old word disk, you can download it and use it instead. I did the same on my laptop and i refuse (stamps foot down and crosses arms) to buy the new Vista(hell).
I hope that will help you some, I use all the older, comfortable versions I like. I refuse to make them make me update to stuff I have to learn all over again, I do not adjust to changes well (lol).
Other then that, I saw you were writing about fall, but I tell ya I have snow and frost and floods like you wouldn’t belive.
It’s cool to know you went back to your Texas roots. I am not from there, but I was stationed at Ft Sam, in San Antonio once and I totally fell in love with the city! My best friend lives there now and I can’t wait to go back again. Either for her or the military!
Good luck, God bless and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
    Happy writing~

  9. I too just got one of those new laptops with the Vista. This was my first laptop ever and my son had to help me turn the thing on. lol He is 9 people!

I am one of those who hate change so I am having a pretty hard time with it. also the fact that I hate to read directions doesn’t help either.

Sherrilyn Kenyons books are wonderful and I say the same about HB but like you, they some how end up in my hands. I still don’t know how that happens.

My first book of yours was Night Games. I loved it so I bought the Wicked series. I still need to start it but I am sure that I will enjoy it as musch as your other book.

    Happy Holidays!

  11. I absolutely love your books, I recently bought A Taste of Darkness and now i’m reading them all. If your looking for a good read Christine Feeman has The Dark Series, the first book is called Dark Prince. And, one of my favorite books that started my fascination with all things vampire Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series. (The first book is being made into a movie coming out Dec. 12, 08.) It’s a YA series but absolutely excellent, just like the effect your books have on me I couldn’t put it down. For a week I ate, slept, and read; and if you knew me that would be very surprizing. I never was a reader, never I hated it, but I was inspired and now I can’t watch TV becuase i’d rather be reading. Master of Ecstasy is great, I love your style of writing. Thanks for your stories, I can’t wait for more.
