Thanks

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words about my books. I finally finished A TASTE OF DARKNESS, and now I’m working on my novella for the July anthology, SURF’S UP, with MaryJanice Davidson and Janelle Denison. It’s tentatively titled, “Hot Summer Bites.” And no, it’s not about two mosquitoes who fall in love.

Michele, I loved your catnip story. And thanks Megan and Gabby for your suggestions on how to keep Abby from clawing everything. Believe me, I’ll try them all. Do they have a commercial catnip spray? Please tell me she’ll mature and grow out of this phase.

Robin, I finally finished my week of jury duty. They chose me to sit on a jury that heard a very ugly case. I won’t talk about it, but I definitely never want to do that again. And as for calling some kick-butt heroines “abrasive,” that was the perfect word to describe them.

I don’t know if I mentioned this already (I’m too lazy to check), but I’m treating myself to a digital camera for Christmas. I bought a magazine that gave info on all the cameras out there, and now I’m more confused than ever. I need something that takes good pictures but isn’t too hard to operate. I want it to be small enough to carry around in my purse. I want to get it now so that I’ll know how to use it next year when I go to Ireland.

What do you guys think about writing in first person? Some of my favorite authors do it (Janet Evanovich, MaryJanice Davidson, Charlaine Harris, etc.). And now, two of the members of my critique group have sold vampire series written in first person (Kimberly Raye and Gerry Barlett). I’ve thought about trying it, but I don’t know if I want to take the chance when readers have gotten used to me writing in third person. Hmm, just a thought.

  1. I’m so pleased you liked my ‘catnip’story, Nina.
    Thanks!

Wow, Kimberly Raye is in your critique group?!
I’ve read her stories too..neat. Tell her ‘Hi!
LOL, not that she’d know me…:-)

First person. I’m noticing more and more writing from that POV.
Not everyone can make it work. It places more on the writer, I think, to explain everything by her character’s actions and reactions versus letting us get clued in by, say, the hero’s POV. It is a challenge. I think you CAN do it. However,(I’m guessing here) the shift would not only be a new way of writing, but maybe in story focus as well? I mean, we love your vamps..would you continue them or try…werewolves? or Sci-Fi fantasy? Something that is fresh all around so no one will have expectations..would that free you?. Does that even make sense?
Anyway…you can count on one fan here, supporting whatever direction you want to go. There is no growth without trying. So, I say..Go for it!! :D

Oh, and good luck with the digital camera. I have had mine for 3 years now and I LOVE it. I have a Kodak. I too like things simple. Point and click. Can’t get more simple than that and today, they have printers that can interact with your camera and programs..oh my goodness you are in for such a treat! Happy shopping!

    All the best, Nina!!!!!

  2. yes you can buy commercial cat nip sprays, you can also buy the cat nip plant but if you do I suguest putting it in a back corner of your garden cause cats from miles around are going to come over for a sniff at it. We planted a ‘cat’ garden near our compost heap which means we have a backyard full of really mellow cats most of the time. I had a friend who bought an agressive dog from the pound and asserted his dominance by wrestling the dog to the ground and biting his throat proving himself alpha don’t know if that would work on a cat tho.

As for the digital camera you want one that is 3+ megapixals, this determines the size you can enlarge the picture to without getting all dotty. You also want optical zoom over digital zoom for the same reason. Optical zoom works just like the old film camera’s and works with the outside image whereas digital zoom enlarges the picture inside the camera which can make it go dotty when you try to enlarge :) Next step go see how much the camera flash cards, SD XD ect, cost pick a camera that uses the cheepest one :) as this is going to be your reoccuring cost.

Buy rechargable batteries make sure they are the right type for your camera by taking it with you when you buy them :)

Anything else is an extra, ie docking stations, photo printers, cases. Tell them that your a famous romance author and you’ll be mentioning the camera and possibly the store on your website and they might give you a discout.

    hope this helps

  3. oh and I forgot to say that well written first person can be excellent but because your only seeing the hero through the heroines eyes it can make it difficult to know him and cheer for him before the heroine notices what a fab guy he really is

  4. Stay away from Coolpix!

First person is … tricky. Your plots would not be enhanced by narrowing the perspective. Judi McCoy is wrestling with this idea as well for a new series.

  5. POV issues are hard to address because they’re so subjective. That being said, here’s my two bits on the matter…

First person stories are a fun challenge to write. Authors like Janet Evanovich, Robert Parker, JK Rowling, etc., can write in first person because the mystery and/or adventure are the driving forces of the story. I suppose the same could be said for most other genres.

Romance novels are driven primarily by the seduction and matters of the heart. The very best ones I’ve read tend to get all parties involved. This is probably why we see so few of them written in first person. I’ve spent the last half hour wracking my brain and I can’t remember a single full length romance novel which left a strong enough impression on me to recommend writing one in first person (I guess I must be a closet ‘head hopper’ after all. Just please don’t tell my crit group. Goodness knows what they’d do if they discover that little factoid!).

So, my two cents says that if you’re looking for tons and tons of really hard work and loads of frustration along the way, despite the uphill battle, FP-POV may be the way to go.

On the other hand, lots of extremely well written short stories are in FP. Shorts might be a good place to experiment with pov’s to see if you even enjoy writing from only one person’s head or not.

As for what your readers are used to? You’re a wonderful writer and I believe you can carry anything off if you’ve got the time and inclination. Whichever way you go where pov’s concerned, I hope you’ll continue to find a way to keep the zing your cosmic troublemaker(s) add to the stories. I love them!

  6. Nina,
I love your books and it is hard to believe that this is my first time to visit your site.
I am a fellow cat lover and also have one baby that loves cords, although she prefers any coily cord. I have to second the other poster that said to have two cats. We got our Tiger a friend to fight with and now they leave the furniture and the cords (usually) alone. They take out all of their frustration on each other. Very entertaining.
Love your books and I hope you keep Sparkle Stardust in there, along with the handsome vamps of course.
